1935

Cheeseburger registers as a trade name in Denver by Louis Ballast

1936

Denver Dairy Council incorporated as a regional nutrition education arm of National Dairy Council. The mission of the Denver Dairy Council was to educate school children about the benefits of consuming milk; many of the programs were purposed for children and aimed at the school cafeteria and classroom.

1937

National Milk Month begins in Wisconsin, becomes June Dairy Month in 1939

1942

The National Dairy Council released A Guide to Good Eating. The Guide to Good Eating was also the first illustrated food guide depicting each of the seven food groups: milk, vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats and meat substitutes, cereal and bread and butter in full color.

1943

Butter is one of the seven basic food groups – 2 tbl daily recommended

1944

American Dairy Association of Colorado was established as the local arm of American Dairy Association, Chicago.  Founded by dairy farmers to promote Colorado milk.

1946

National School Lunch program begins  history

1947

Karl’s Farm Dairy established in Northglenn

1948

Ultra-high temperature pasteurization introduced

1950

Mike Leprino begins to make small batches of ricotta and mozzarella cheese

1951

Arden Creamery processing plant established in Delta

1956

Jackson Ice Cream begins manufacturing ice cream for Kroger stores

1964

Denver Dairy Council expands to include services covering Colorado

1965

Longmont Dairy established

1966

Safeway Milk processing plant opens in Denver

1968

Longmont Dairy opens processing plant

1970

Denver Dairy Council adds Wyoming to its service area

USDA revised the Basic Four to include a fifth category, ‘fats, sweets and Alcohol’ group. National Dairy Council retained the four food approach and depicted an ‘other’ group containing those foods that did not fit into the original four food groups because of an insufficient nutrient content.

Denver Dairy Council changes its name to Western Dairy Council

Dairy Management Inc. formed

Dairying moves into 2nd place among Colorado agricultural businesses; farm cash receipts total almost $264 million

2004

Colorado has 102,000 dairy cows, averaging 21,412 pounds of milk this year. Colorado cows were the second highest producers in 2003, fourth in 2004

Denver Broncos are first NFL team to have their own official milk-orange-flavored Milk High Milk

Rocky Mountain Dairyettes renamed to Colorado Dairy Women

Colorado has 165 licensed dairy farms

2007

Western Dairyfarmers’ Promotion Association and Western Dairy Council merge and become Western Dairy Association
