Sustainability

Dairy producers have a very long history of being good stewards. For generations, dairy producers have brought fresh, delicious milk and other wholesome dairy foods to America’s tables and have also cared for the land and contributed to strong local communities and family businesses. Over the past sixty years alone, they have reduced the dairy carbon footprint 63% and make up only 2% of the total carbon footprint in the United States.

To the dairy farmer, sustainability means “capturing unmet consumer demand by providing consumers with the nutritious dairy products they want, in a way that makes the industry, people, and the earth economically, environmentally, and socially better – now and for future generations.”

Dairy Industry Sustainability Vision

The changing social, environmental and economic landscapes of our planet, nation and industry call for a unified response from all participants in the dairy industry. With both challenges and opportunities in mind, we are committed to working together to achieve a positive and lasting contribution.

The dairy industry is committed to the following guiding principles:

  • Ensuring economic fairness across the value chain
  • Preserving and enhancing the health and wellness of all people
