Western Dairy Association serves as the regional Dairy Council for Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. Our staff of registered dietitians and family and consumer science specialists are committed to providing credible, science-based research and nutrition information to consumers, health professionals and the media. The Dairy Council has been a leader in nutrition research since 1915. Our goal is to ensure health professionals, scientists, media and educators have a credible body of nutrition knowledge upon which to educate or base health recommendations.

Western Dairy Association disseminates nutrition programs, materials and research to support government recommendations for improved nutrition for Americans, including consumption of at least three servings of nutrient-rich low-fat or fat-free milk and milk products a day.

    The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans focus on preventing or reducing overweight and obesity through improved eating and physical activity behaviors, by placing an emphasis on a total diet approach. The Guidelines urge Americans to reduce calories and watch portion sizes, make more nutrient-rich choices, and move more. This simple meal plan serves as a tool to help patients and clients follow the Dietary Guidelines by providing flexible and realistic ideas for getting the most nutrition for your calories throughout the day.

    Health Implications of Dairy Intake in US Hispanics: Opportunities for Nutrition Intervention and Education

    This joint report from the National Hispanic Medical Association, and the Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition, a member interest group of the American Dietetic Association, summarizes current knowledge regarding Hispanic health as it relates to consumption of dairy foods. Additionally, this report identifies meaningful education strategies for helping Hispanic individuals meet dietary recommendations for low-fat and fat-free dairy foods.

    Make a difference in the health of our youth. The National Dairy Council and the National Football League present Fuel Up to Play 60, a program that motivates students and their schools to make wellness a priority. Students and schools work together to expand opportunities for students to “get active and play” for 60 minutes daily and to “fuel up” with nutrient-rich foods such as low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.     Unintended Consequences of Simplistic Dietary Recommendations

    How often do we hear nutrition advice oversimplified? Omit trans fats… exercise more… eat more fruits and vegetables… avoid anything with high-fructose corn syrup… take your vitamins. Everywhere we turn, simple dietary messages that are intended to improve health and well-being are heard.  This paper, published by Dairy Council of California, and endorsed by two former American Dietetic Association presidents, examines the consequences at the consumer level of “sound-bite” nutrition.
