NFL and Dairy Council Launch Fuel Up to Play 60

A new initiative tackling childhood obesity

Created in partnership with National Dairy Council and the National Football League, and provided locally by Western Dairy Association and the Denver Broncos, Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program that empowers youth to take action in their school and for their own health. The goal of the program is to make long-term changes in the school’s nutrition and physical activity. The program is helping youth “fuel up” with critical nutrient-rich foods (low fat and fat free dairy products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) often missing from their diets, and to “get active and play” for 60 minutes daily.

Poudre School District Kicks-off Fuel Up to Play 60

Throughout the month of October, seven middle schools in the Poudre School District (PSD) kicked-off the newest addition to their school district’s wellness policy, Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP 60).

Poudre School Districts’ FUTP 60 student teams will be working year-long in partnership with their school to expand opportunities for physical activity and increase the availability to nutrient-rich foods – fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat and fat-free dairy products.

District middle schools kicked-off their FUTP 60 program, each featuring Western Dairy Association sponsored program, Eat Right Get Movin’ with Miles featuring Denver Broncos mascot, Miles. Each student team was also able to have some one-on-one time with Miles, taking pictures, and getting autographs.

“Fuel Up to Play 60 is really inspirational! So much information is given about how to eat healthy and getting 60 minutes of exercise a day. It’s amazing!” expressed 7th grade FUTP 60 student team member.

As a part of this program, every participating middle school chose one healthy eating strategy and one physical activity strategy. Kinard Middle School’s FUTP 60 student team has chosen to ‘fuel up’ through implementing the ‘drink more milk and recycle’ program. Students will be adding a snack bar in their lunch room which will include milk and flavored milk options. This program will also add to their already sustainable recycling program. Kinard’s team will also be increasing physical activity and encouraging classmates to ‘play 60′ through in-class activity breaks through the school day.

The other six middle schools through PSD have launched FUTP 60 and will begin implementing their chosen action strategies within the next few weeks. Teams are improving the wellness environment in their schools through increasing availability to breakfast, incorporating health snacks and creating walking clubs.

Florida Pitt Waller Institutes Breakfast in the Classroom

The Florida Pitt Waller School is a K-8 school in the Denver Public Schools (DPS) and one of the Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP 60) Enhanced schools. The FUTP 60 School Wellness Investigation (SWI) revealed that middle school students were not participating in the traditional before school cafeteria breakfast program- even though all DPS schools offer Universal-Free Breakfast to all students.

FUTP 60 student team members became excited about Breakfast in the Classroom after discovering that students do not eat breakfast at school or home. The student team members presented the case for Breakfast in the classroom to teachers, and on November 16, 2009, the middle school rolled out the program in conjunction with the FUTP60 Kick-Off.

Student team members help with the program by delivering food carts to classrooms, collecting trash and disposing of trash bags in hallways for facility management to pick up. The school’s principal shared, “Fuel Up to Play 60 is developing a greater sense of community and responsibility among students.”

WDA FUTP 60 Mini Grant Recipients

Western Dairy Association provided several $1,000.00 grants to launch Fuel Up to Play 60. Here are some of the schools that won, and highlights of programs they are implementing.

Letford Elementary – Johnstown, CO

Healthy snacks abound with this school’s new “3-Every-Day” vending machine. Offerings include yogurt, low fat cheese, milk, and flavored milk, as well as complimentary healthful snacks to go along with dairy products. Also, a “School on the Move” walking program is starting in conjunction with the Healthy Kids Club of Poudre Valley Hospital. Nutrition education is being incorporated into P.E. classes, involving students in active learning focused on nutrition topics.

Monroe Intermediate School – Green River, WY

Following a Monroe Intermediate school wellness investigation, students met with the school nutrition director to explore a Grab ‘n’ Go breakfast program. Their kick-off assembly featured a milk mustache booth. For healthy eating action strategies, the students planned a Super Bowl lunch with the nutrition director, provided FUTP 60 messages on the morning announcements, and planned a food tasting night with a baked potato bar for Family Fun Night filled with nutrition and physical activities. They also formed a walking club and offered school-wide mini-activity breaks, along with conducting monthly themed walk/jogs (Turkey Trot, Jingle Jog, Cupid Cape, and Leprechaun Leap).

Amsterdam School – Manhattan, MT

Amsterdam School implemented Breakfast in the Classroom as a nutrition strategy. The student team and their advisor also started the program “Take 5 For Fitness.” This school-wide initiative incorporates physical activity on days when P.E. does not occur.
