FUTP60 & Other Health Initiatives

Collective Action Needed to Reverse the Trends in Childhood Obesity

Today’s youth are on track to live shorter lives than their parents – a startling assessment of the effects of our national slide into unhealthy lifestyles.

Turning a national trend around does, indeed, take a village, and a number of coalitions and national health initiatives have formed to push for change. Among their goals are more physical activity time and healthier food choices in schools.

FUTP 60 complements a number of national health initiatives. These programs can work hand-in-hand in helping schools seek to improve the health of the next generation.

U.S. National Physical Activity Plan

Aims to increase the physical activity of all Americans, including K-12 students. Akin to the Plan, FUTP 60 encourages partnerships that link youth with physical activity opportunities in schools and communities and that provide opportunities for physical activity before and after school. Together, these programs can help youth achieve the expert-recommended 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. For more information on the Plan visit http://www.physicalactivityplan.org/education.php.

USDA’s Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC)

Encourages schools to take action to create healthier school environments. Upon completion of certain levels of engagement – bronze, silver or gold – schools are recognized for their efforts. FUTP 60 can help your school achieve HUSSC recognition. For more information on HUSSC program visit http://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/healthierus/index.html.

CDC’s Coordinated School Health Program

Features eight school components that serve as the framework for a coordinated approach to health-enhancing behaviors that enhance student’s readiness to learn. By working with nutrition services or involving families and community members, FUTP 60 supports the pillars of the Coordinated School Health Program and can help schools achieve their building-specific health goals. Kids Eat Right

This joint initiative between the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and ADA Foundation aims to ensure quality nutrition and healthy weight for all youth through a member-driven campaign. It calls on ADA members to volunteer, develop their personalized action plan and make strides toward healthier kids. FUTP 60 is one of the action strategies volunteers can select.
