Stetson Elementary FUTP 60 Team Leads Food Drive
The Stetson Elementary Fuel Up to Play 60 team helped collect record donations for Harvest of Love at Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado this year. The school has taken part in the Harvest of Love for the last several years, but this year they collected a total of 25,696 pounds of food!
The FUTP 60 team worked to collect food and cash donations both at the school and over weekends at a local Walmart location during the first 3 weeks of November. Their efforts were not only good for the community, but they also helped the team to complete the Fuel Up Your Community play for the FUTP 60 program.
It was important to Monfre and the team that Harvest of Love start to evolve into a year-long effort to alleviate community hunger instead of just a month during the year, so he is working on projects his FUTP 60 team can do year-round.
“The team actually decided to do an extra shift at Walmart to collect food over the weekend after the school contest had ended,” Monfre explained, “they’ll be helping with collecting canned goods and turkeys with Care and Share.”
Monfre said they plan to help with the post office’s annual food drive later this year and that they will be heading to Care and Share’s warehouse to do volunteer shifts sorting canned goods.
“One in four students don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Program Advisor Matt Monfre. “That’s why we do Harvest of Love.”
